Washington (dbTechno) – The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has begun the process of laying off 3,000 employees.
The majority of these employees worked at the John Sealy Hospital.
The layoffs were approved just a week ago with the total number being 3,800 full-time employees.
The first 3,000 were given their notice yesterday that they no longer had jobs.
A lot of this is due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Ike, which devastated the island campus which had 8,000 employees.
The storm flooded the campus buildings back in September and damaged the John Sealy Hospital.
By next Monday, it is expected that the layoffs will be complete as the resy of the employees are given their notice.
