Genentech Comes To Defense Of Cancer Drug Avastin
November 20, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Genentech has come to the defense of its highly-popular cancer drug Avastin.
The company immediately responded to a new report released by a team of researchers which linked the cancer drug to the development of blood clots in the veins.
Researchers led by Dr. Shenhong Wu focused on 15 different clinical trials.
What they concluded was that those who took Avastin increased their risk of blood clots in the veins by 33%.
The study was published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, but is now being challenged.
Avastin is marketed by both Genentech as well as Swiss drugmaker Roche and is used to block cancer tumor growth.
It has been proven to be extremely effective when combined with chemotherapy in patients.
Genentech has come to the defense of the drug stating that the results may have been different due to factors.
The company has stressed though that all of the warnings related to Avastin are on the label, including clot risks.
