Babies Born In Autumn More Likely To Develop Asthma
November 22, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, babies who are born in autumn have the highest risk of developing asthma, with the risk being 30% higher than if they were born at any other time during the year.
The study was led by Dr. Tina Hartert from the Asthma Research center at Vanderbilt University.
Researchers have suspected in the past that babies born in the fall in North America are more likely to develop asthma, but to this point there has yet to be a study to prove it.
This new study focused on the medical records of 95,000 infants and their mothers in the state of Tennessee.
What they found was that babies who were born in autumn were at the highest risk for developing asthma.
The next closest group was babies who had suffered from bronchitis.
The belief behind the increased risk appears to be infections and such which pop up during that time of the year.
Researchers are now going to look into a way to try and prevent these infections with a vaccine or something of that nature.
The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
