Women Who Lack Sleep Face Increased Cancer Risk
November 22, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, women who do not sleep enough face an increased risk of cancer no matter how much they exercise.
The study was led by James McClain of the National Cancer Institute and was carried out with a total of 5,986 women in Maryland.
It focused on women aged 18 to 65 and aimed at finding if regular exercise could reduce the risk of developing cancer.
What they found though was that not only did exercise have a major impact on the risk of cancer, but sleep did as well.
Researchers concluded that women who slept less than seven hours a night increased their risk of cancer.
They faced a 47% increased risk of cancer overall compared to women who were active and slept over seven hours each night.
Researchers are scratching their heads though as they still do not know why too little sleep increases your risk of developing cancer.
It is obvious from the results of the study though that it does make women more likely.
The study was reported at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
