Heart Disease Patients Who Lack Exercise Face Risk Of Depression
November 26, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Researchers have come out and stated that heart disease patients who do not exercise regularly face a high risk of depression, which can lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits and more heart troubles.
The study was carried out on a total of 1,017 heart disease patients and was led by Mary Whooley of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco.
What they found was that 20% of those who suffered from depression were far more likely to face further cardiovascular problems.
Depression is known to be a serious problem for heart disease patients, and can lead to further heart attacks and other troubles.
Heart disease patients who were depressed were found to be more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, and/or other cardiac event.
What researchers discovered though was that the risks decreased with the more exercise that the patients took part in.
Depression ended up keeping the patients from taking part in physical activity, which resulted in poor lifestyles.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
