Chemical Found In The Body Which Could Fight Obesity
December 1, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Scientists have managed to discover a chemical in the body that may help fight obesity by curbing your appetite.
The chemical that they have found is actually a fatty substance which is found in the gut of the body, and was found by Gerald Shuman of Yale University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute with colleagues.
This chemical sends signals up to the brain, telling that part of the brain to stop eating.
Researchers believe that they may be able to use this chemical to actually help control your appetite and get you to stop eating.
A study was carried out on mice and rats to take a look at the chemical known as NAPE.
They found that the chemical regulated how much food the body could intake. Going the other way, it could actually prevent eating as well.
When the mice and rats ate meals high in fat, the levels of the chemical increased.
This was not seen though when they consumed certain other foods such as carbohydrates or protein.
Researchers were able to take the chemical and change it around. By then injecting it back into the animals they could reduce their appetite.
The study was published in the journal Cell.
