Study Finds Brains Of Autistic Kids React Slower To Sounds
December 1, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new report released this week, brains of those with autism have a harder time communicating due to the fact that they react slower to noises or sounds that they hear.
Researchers were led by Timothy Roberts from the Department of Radiology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The whole idea behind the study was to test out 30 autistic children ages 6 to 15.
They had them listen to a variety of different sounds, and watched their brain impulses to see how they reacted.
They did this using technology known as MEG or magnetoencephalography.
Researchers discovered that the kids with autism reacted anywhere from 20% to 50% slower to the noises than kids who hdid not have autism.
This was consistent with sounds that included simple syllables and things of that nature.
This could help explain why kids with autism have issues with communication.
The findings were presented at a meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
