Half Of College-Aged Adults Suffer From Psychiatric Disorder
December 2, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has found that it is very common for young adults or college-aged adults in the U.S. to suffer from a personality or psychiatric disorders..
The study was led by researchers from New York State Psychiatric Institute, as well as Columbia University.
It was based on interviews with 5,000 young adults between the ages of 19 to 25 in 2001 and 2002.
Half of these adults suffered from a psychiatric disorder, with the push now on to help these college-aged adults with these mental disorders.
Researchers found that 20% of young adults in the U.S. had their quality of life decreased by a personality disorder they suffered from.
On top of that, less than 25% of these young adults received treatment for the disorder.
Personality disorders are the second most common issue for college-aged adults behind drug or alcohol abuse in the 18-24 age group.
It is quite clear that these types of psychiatric disorders are far more common in the U.S. than originally thought.
The study has been published in the December issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
