Details Released On What Caused Heparin Contamination
December 4, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with a team of researchers have released results of their investigation into what caused the adverse reactions linked to the blood-thinner heparin.
The investigation was carried out for many reasons, but the overall goal was to try and decipher exactly what happened to cause the contamination of the blood thinner.
Not only that though, they also wanted to reveal as much information to the public as possible as to what actually happened.
The details have been released in a new paper in the New England Journal of Medicine, and show that investigators were able to tie the reasons to oversulfated chondroitin sulfate in certain vials of the drug.
This was able to link the findings that they had made in the laboratory to actual patients and issues that they had.
Back in March, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed 93 deaths and hundreds of adverse reactions to heparin from January to March of this year.
