The study was led by researchers from Harvard, as we ll as the University of California at San Diego.

Researchers focused on nearly 5,000 people and their ties to family, friends, co-workers, etc.

Overall, they looked at over 50,000 different connections that these people had starting in 1984, and how they progressed.

The data came from the Framingham Heart STudy which followed people, their kids, friends, etc.

What they found was that is an individual was happy, then they would be more likely to make others happy who were around them.

Breaking it down into the actual numbers, if you are happy, you make your close friend 25% more likely to be happy.

That close friend is then 10% more likely to have his friend be happier, and that trickles onward in that fashion.

So by one person being happy and smiling, that makes everyone else more likely to be happy as well.

Among siblings, spouses, etc. the percentages were not quite as high as from friends.

The chance of increasing the happiness of people weighed heavily on how close you were to them in actual geography.

The study was published in the British Medical Journal.
