Getting One Extra Hour Of Sleep Lowers Your Heart Risk
December 30, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has revealed that you can greatly improve the health of your heart by getting just one extra hour of sleep each night.
The study was carried out by looking at roughly 500 U.S. adults who were all considered to be middle-aged, and was conducted at the University of Chicago.
At the start of the study, all of the patients had their hearts checked and were monitored from there.
The group averaged roughly 6 hours of sleep each night.
The idea behind the study was to track their progress, sleeping patterns, etc.
What they found was that over the five-year period, those who got an extra hour of sleep each night were less likely to develop coronary artery calcification.
That condition can lead to your arteries being clogged up, increasing your risk for heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke.
At the conclusiion of the study, 12% developed this heart condition.
Those who added that one hour of sleep though cut their risk by 33%.
The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
