Washington (dbTechno) – A new study has found that gastric bypass surgery can reverse type 2 diabetes in obese teenagers.
The idea behind this new study was to see if obese teens with type 2 diabetes could be helped by going through a procedure known as gastric bypass surgery, which helps with weight loss.
Researchers were led by Dr. Thomas Inge from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and looked at a total of 78 teens for the study.
They then picked out 11 of these teens between the ages of 13 and 21 and had them go through the gastric bypass surgery.
The hope was that they would find out if the surgery would be able to greatly help obese teens.
The 11 that they chose were the heaviest out of the group, all being around 200-pounds overweight.
After a year went by, 10 out of the 11 teens were able to drop roughly 30% of their body weight.
On top of that, 10 out of the 11 were also able to stop their type 2 diabetes medication.
Looking at the other group, the teens who did not have surgery were not able to lose the weight as easily, and were still on medication.
The study has been published this week in the journal Pediatrics.
