(Update) Teens Who Make Virginity Pledge Less Likely To Use Birth Control

The study was led by Janet E. Rosenbaum of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The data used came from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which consisted of 934 high school students.

The researchers compared teens who had taken the virginity pledge to those who had not taken a pledge.

What they found was that the rate of the teens taking part in sex was the same regardless if they had made the virginity pledge or not.

The alarming aspect of this is that those who did make the pledge were less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control.

This means that teens who make a virginity pledge not only are just as likely to have intercourse, but they are also more likely to take part in it in an unsafe way as they are less likely to protect themselves.

The only differences found in terms of rates of having sex was that those who made the pledge had 0.1 fewer sex partners during the 5 years they were watched.

The study has been published in the journal Pediatrics.

  • I wonder if Sarah Palin’s daughter(s) took the “virginity pledge.”

  • My personal opinion is that in your data on the virginity pledge what was the basis of the pledge. For any pledge to be adherred to it must be rooted and grounded in a belief system. One can say they are not going to engage in premarital sex, but if there is not a true belief that sustains that pledge then it is guaranteed to be violated. I would like to see what findings you would come up with in the christian community of those that have vowed in accordance with their belief system and faith to remain virgins. This article is knowlegeable, but it only gives approval for pre-teens/young adults to engage in protected sex that leads to unstable relationships. This is because sex in no way validates ones affection or love. It is an act of which animals engage in, but we are of a higher order and should have feelings, emotions and love attached to the act.
