Osteoporosis Drugs May Increase Risk Of Jaw Disease

The jaw disease, also known as ONJ, is attributed by pain in the jaw.  On top of that, it can also lead to loose teeth, as well as swelling of jaw tissue and infection.

The study was conducted by researchers from th eUniversity of Southern California in Los Angeles, and aimed to see if the drugs had any impact on the risk of the jaw disease.

The drugs in question here are known as bisphosphonates and include drugs such as Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva.  The drugs are given to patients who have osteoporosis to help build up their bone mass.

What researchers found by looking into medical records of dental patients from USC was that 4% who took Fosamax ended up with the jaw disease.

This compared to 0 out of the nearly 14,000 patients who were not on the drug.

This has led researchrs to believe that these types of drugs increase the risk of the jaw disease.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

  • I M A 77 YR. OLD WHITE FEMALE. iWAS TREATED WITH FOSAMAX FOR 8 YEARS AND RECENTLY WAS GIVEN THE INFUSION OF RECLAST. THIS CAUSED EXTREME BONE AND MUSCLE PAIN REQUIRING DOSES OF PREDNISONE AND PAIN MEDS. TO MAKE WALKING POSSIBLE. tHIS COULD HAVE BEEN A COMPLICATION RESULTING FROM MY TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT BUT NO ONE HAS SUGGESTED THIS.

  • So what’s a person supposed to do? What are the alternatives? I was put on Fosamex about 5 or 6 years ago by the VA. Last year I developed an absessed tooth. I went to a private dentist as I’m not elgible for dental care thru VA. When he found out I was taking Fosamex he wouldn’t touch me. I went to VA emergency room and was sent to dental. I had to go off Fosamex for a little over 3 months before he would pull the absessed tooth. Two months later I was put back on Fosamex.
Since being on Fosamex I have lost most of the filings I have received over the years. As a further note I am a Prostrate Cancer survivor? for 4 years. After Prostrate surgery I was given radiation therepy. Could that have a bearing on problems with Fosamex?
