Obesity Can Increase Ovarian Cancer Risk By Over 80%
January 6, 2009
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, being overweight or obese can increase your risk of developing ovarian cancer by over 80%.
Ovarian cancer is currently the fifth leading cancer killer among U.S. women, with the survival rate being extremely low for those diagnosed.
Researchers focused on a total of roughly 10,000 women for the study, and found a link between obesity and ovarian cancer.
What they found was that women who were obese and never used hormone therapy for menopause faced an increased risk of developing the disease.
The overall risk was said to increase by more than 80% for obese postmenopausal women who never used hormone therapy.
With the survival rate for ovarian cancer being so low, only 37% survive past 5 years, this is a scary development to say the least.
The belief is that being obese can spark too much estrogen to be produced, causing problems in the body and leading to ovarian cancer.
The study will be published in the February 15th issue of the journal Cancer.
