Salmonella Outbreak Hits 42 States, Sickens Nearly 400 People
January 8, 2009
Boston (dbTechno) - A salmonella outbreak is spreading through the U.S. at a rapid pace as it has now been confirmed to have sickened 388 people across 42 states.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) came out and reported on the salmonella outbreak on Wednesday, revealing that 42 states in the U.S. have been hit with it to this point.
The bacteria salmonella is believed to have originated from some type of food source.
The problem though is that there is still no word as to what exactly the source is.
Health officials are looking into what people who are now falling ill consumed recently in terms of food.
The CDC is working with state health authorities, along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture to find the source.
The hope is that once they do find the source, they will be able to put a stop to it.
Back from April to August of 2008, more than 1,400 people were sickened by a salmonella outbreak in the U.S.
The CDC confirmed after it was all said and done that jalapeno peppers were the cause of the outbreak.
Symptoms linked to salmonella include diarrhea, cramps, and other ailments.
Out of the 388 sickened, 70 have been sent to the hospital thus far.
