(Update) Babies Born Via C-Section Before 39 Weeks Face Risks
January 9, 2009
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, babies who are born via C-section before 39 weeks are far more likely to have health complications compared to those who are given the full 39 weeks in the womb.
A new study was carried out this week and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, focusing in on over 13,000 births that all involved a C-section.
They looked at the various health risks posed by a C-section, especially when having it before 39 weeks.
Researchers, led by Dr. Alan Tita of the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that babies born at 38 weeks were 50% more likely to have health complications.
Babies born at 37 weeks were said to face an even higher risk of health problems.
These health complications ranged from feeding problems, respiratory problems, etc.
They were also far more likely to have to receive treatment in the NICU.
Another interesting aspect of this is that it also reveals mothers should not wait beyond 39 weeks.
The risk of health complications was found to increase again after 41 weeks, so 39 is just right.
