Hormone Replacement Therapy Shrinks Brains Of Women

January 13, 2009

A new study has revealed that hormone replacement therapy may actually shrink the brains of older women.<br /> ....Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has revealed that hormone replacement therapy may actually shrink the brains of older women.

Researchers were led by Dr. Susan Resnick of the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore, Maryland and focused on a total of 1,400 women aged 71 to 89.

All of the women had taken part in a previous trial on HRT or hormone replacement therapy.

What they found was that post-menopausal women who went through hormone replacement therapy were more likely to see a decrease in the size of two areas of the brain.

The areas of the brain impacted included those that had to do with thinking, and memory.

Women who took the oestrogen pills compared to the placebo were more likely to see their frontal lobe and hippocampus be smaller.

The average age of women who went through the hormone replacement therapy was between 45 to 60.

This could have a major impact on the development of memory loss in women long-term.

Women who are already in the beginning stages of a degenerative disease such as dementia could see the process sped up.
