(Update) Vicks VapoRub Harms Infants When Not Used Correctly
January 14, 2009
Washington (dbTechno) - A new study has found that Vicks VapoRub can cause breathing problems in infants under the age of 2 when it is not used properly.
The Proctor & Gamble product was the focus of a new investigation led by Dr. Bruce Rubin of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
What they found was that if the Vicks VapoRub is not used correctly, it can lead to respiratory disease in kids under the age of 2.
It causes these problems by allowing the airways of the infants to be filled up with mucus, and swell.
This leads them to basically going into a state where they cannot breathe normally.
The only issues seen through their study occur when the product is placed under the nose.
This occurs due to the fact that the ingredients in the product act as irritants basically for the kids.
Researchers have stated that this is the case for similar generic versions of the product as well.
Vicks VapoRub reportedly already has the warning to never put it under the nose.
