Researchers Use Genetic Codes To Hunt Common Cold Cure
February 16, 2009
Washington (dbTechno) - Researchers have come out and stated that they have made a breakthrough in regards to coming up with a cure for the common cold, by cracking the genetic code behind it.
The study was led by Dr. Stephen B. Liggett of the University of Maryland.
Dr. Liggett and other researchers have been working to figure out a way to try and cure the common cold.
They have done so by collecting the genetic codes of 99 known viruses.
The thing that all of these viruses have in common is that they all lead to nasal infections, the cold.
Virus samples which were collected in doctors’ offices for over 20 years were used in the study.
They were collected over that time period by the American Type Culture Collection.
The tricky aspect to this is that the viruses over time continue to evolve.
As time goes by though, researchers have made progress in ways to try and come up with a cure for the cold.
By looking at the genomes further, they hope to find a point where they can attack the viruses, curing the cold for the most part.
The study has been published in the February 12th online issue of the journal Science.
