Maggots Found To Be Effective In Treating Leg Ulcers
March 20, 2009
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, maggots are just as effective as a regular dressing in terms of treating leg ulcers on patients.
Maggots have been used for years in terms of helping with the repair of wounds on patients, but a new study has showed just how effective they really can be.
A study was carried out by researchers from the University of York and focused on a total of 267 patients.
They then compared how long it would take maggots to help heal a wound compared to how long a wound would heal with standard dressings.
On average, maggots were able to heal a wound in an average of 236 days.
When compared to dressings, this was actually 9 days shorter, an amazing find to say the least.
The only downside is that patients stated that in the first 24 hours, maggots caused twice as much pain as the dressings did.
The study was published in the online British Medical Journal.
