Washington (dbTechno) – Arena Pharmaceuticals announced the results of a trial on their new obesity drug Lorcaserin, and the results were not that positive.
Lorcaserin is the name of the experimental obesity drug that Arena has been working on for quite some time now.
The study carried out aimed to see if the drug would be able to help people lose significantly more weight than if they were taking no pills.
They compared patients who were taking a placebo to those who were taking Lorcaserin to see what the end result would be.
After a year went by, the average patient lost 8.2% of their body weight or about 17.9 pounds.
Those who were on just a placebo lost on average 3.4% of their body weight or 7.3 pounds.
This was not enough to meet the requirements by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) though as they wanted a 5% improvement from the drug compared to the placebo.
The difference now between 8.2% and 3.4% is only at 4.8%.
The company is weeking U.S. approval for the drug, and will likely get it.
The lackluster results though sent the shares of the company down 34%.
