A team of researchers led by Dr. Daniel Cherkin of Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle worked on patients to see just how effective acupuncture was compared to normal treatments in helping with back pain.

They carried out a controlled study of a total of 638 patients who all had chronic lower back pain.

They then took these patients and split them up into a few different groups to try different treatments.

Some groups were treated with real acupuncture, using a needle and all, while others were treated with a toothpick that did not actually break the skin.

One other group received normal medical treatment, minus the acupuncture.

What researchers found was that 60% of those who received acupuncture, real or fake, saw a huge improvement in terms of their back pain.

There was no different either in regards to whether or not real needles were used.

What this shows is that the acupuncture, real or fake, was better than standard treatments to help with back pain.

The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
