Rate of Obesity Crushing California Economy

July 9, 2009

A new study from the state of California finds that the huge obesity problem is costing the state a ton of money
Boston (DbTechNo) - A new study from the state of California finds that the huge obesity problem is costing the state a ton of money.

The study was produced by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and proves that the cost of dealing with the state’s obesity epidemic is draining the economy.

It finds that up to 59% of Californians are considered obese, one of the highest rates in America.

The report finds that the rate of obesity is directly related to a decrease in work productivity and an increase in health care costs.

The study finds that each year, tax payers and business owners are being saddled with more than 41 billion dollars a year to treat the obese, a fact that many would deem unfair and rightfully so.

Being obese raises a person’s risk of numerous health problems ranging from diabetes and heart disease, to arthritis and stroke.

“We think mostly about the health implications,” said Harold Goldstein, executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy. “But there’s also this enormous burden on the already-burdened California economy.”
