Onglyza Approved by FDA for Diabetes Patients

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved a new drug by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers to treat type 1 diabetes
Boston (DbTechNo) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved a new drug by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers to treat type 1 diabetes.

The drug is called Onglyza, and was approved despite possible side effects related to increased risk of certain heart problems.

The drug works by increasing the ability of the body to control blood sugar levels, a common problem with diabetes patients.

Upper respiratory tract and urinary tract infections were the main side effects associated with the drug, which will compete with Januvia, a leading diabetes drug made by Merck.

The FDA is requiring another study to be performed on high risk diabetes patients to determine if there is actual cause for concern relating to heart health.

The companies have not yet stated when their drug will be available for distribution.
