Boston (DbTechNo) – With it being suicide prevention week, it is a chance for health care providers to get the word out that taking your life is never the only option when things are rough.
This is the message being put out by the American Association of Suicidology who initiated National Suicide Prevention Week, as a way to bring more awareness to mental health.
This is the 35th year that Suicide Week has been held, in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day.
Suicide has been referred to as a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and this statement could not be more true.
Anybody who is thinking of committing suicide, generally exhibits some form of alteration in their normal mental being, and if a friend or loved one can spot this change in time, they can take action to reduce the likelyhood of a suicide attempt.
Some symptoms that maybe exhibited by a person of an unhealthy mind include; withdrawl, drastic mood changes, substance abuse etc.
In the United States alone, suicide accounts for the second leading cause of death amongst college students, according to results of a study conducted back in 2005.
some people suffer from depression. this can be treated but cannot be cured in some cases. people living with depression all their lives is not a temporary problem, it is a fact of life for them. depression can lead to suicide where you want to admit that or not is a temporary problem.
I agree with Trip Beast. I have been dealing with depression for over two decades now, and yes, I have been in treatment for one of those decades. A temporary problem? I suppose you could technically call it that — but for people who have been living with it for years and years, “temporary” is a word that non-depressed people use to make themselves feel less scared about the idea of living with severe mental illnesses. They are not temporary, but require a lifetime of vigilance, and to call them temporary diminishes the lifetime difficulty that mentally ill people have to face.
I agree with the other comments. Your message that “Suicide has been referred to as a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and this statement could not be more true,” could not be further from the truth. Such statements only harm your cause and perpetuate the lack of true understanding of suicide victims. Holding to such fallacious reasoning only discourages people from seeking help. If one is going to get these kinds of platitudes from mental health professionals, why bother?
For some suicide is just the will to not settle showing its ugly face. These people are like supenova they burn hot bright and fast, and when it is all over there is nothing left but a black hole and a cataclism of altered bodies. Depression is only one type of person that is at risk. The human mind is a very volitile abyss, there is no way to know when one of these people is about to go just that one day given the right circumstance they will go.
