Boston (DbTechNo) – Results of a new study show that women who are battling obesity as they enter into middle age are at increased risk of health problems as they continue aging.
Being overweight brings along with it a host of unwelcome health risks, some of which including arthritis, hypertention, diabetes and heart disease.
This latest study was performed by researchers from Harvard, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Writing in the British Medical Journal, researchers detail their study findings on more than 17000 nurses who they followed for up to 24 years.
Those nurses who were considered obese when they hit middle age, were up to 80% more likely to be diagnosed with some form of condition or disease before their 70′s than their thinner peers, a fact that often resulted in a shorter life expectancy.
For every point of BMI increase, there was a noted increased risk of developing ill health before the age of 70.
On the flip side, those women deemed to be at a healthy bodyweight when entering their middle aged years were less likely to develop chronic health problems as they continued aging.
