Study says screening for breast cancer is over rated

Believe it or not, results of a new study suggest that screening for breast cancer may not be as reliable a detection method as it should be
Boston (DbTechNo) – Believe it or not, results of a new study suggest that screening for breast cancer may not be as reliable a detection method as it should be.

According to the American Cancer Society, in some cases, cancers that are detected via screening are treated too aggressively, and others actually go undetected altogether.

“We are not redoing or rethinking our guidelines at this time, nor are we going to restate our guidelines to emphasize the inadequacies of screening,” said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society.

The study, which is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association is causing quite the controversy, as it suggests that screening for breast cancer is over-rated when it comes to diagnosing the disease.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of the disease in women, but if caught early enough can usually be treated successfully.
