Boston (DbTechNo) – The FDA are stating that certain heartburn drugs may interfeer with Plavix, a blood thinner.

Plavix is a blockbuster drug taken daily by millions of Americans to thin their blood, thus reducing their risk of suffering heart attacks and or strokes.

It is the second most popular drug in America, only trailing the cholesterol drug, Lipitor.

Millions of Americans suffer from heartburn on a daily basis, often turning to medication to help ease their discomfort.

The FDA has released a statement urging heartburn patients also taking Plavix to avoid Prilosec and Nexium as these drugs can reduce the effectiveness of the drug.

An enzyme in the heartburn drugs apparently interfeers with the ability of Plavix to work properly, thus rendering it ineffective.

“Patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use clopidogrel to prevent blood clots will not get the full effect of this medicine,” the agency said.
