Boston (DbTechNo) – There maybe a new strain of drug resistant swine flu on the loose in the country of Wales.
Health officials in the country have documented 5 cases of the virus which are resistant to Tamiflu, the main drug given to people diagnosed with the virus.
Five patients at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff have come down with the virus, and it is believed that at least three of them contracted the virus while in the hospital.
If these cases are confirmed to be drug resistant, it would be the first cases in the world to be so.
“Although further epidemiological investigation is under way, it would seem likely that transmission of oseltamivir-resistant H1N1 virus has taken place,”
stated the Health Protection Agency.
Swine flu has taken the world by storm since April, Killing thousands of people from all corners of the world.
“The emergence of influenza A viruses that are resistant to Tamiflu is not unexpected in patients with serious underlying conditions and suppressed immune systems,” said Dr. Roland Salmon, director for communicable disease surveillance for NPHS.
