US Government Approves Research for 13 New Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines
December 2, 2009

Boston (DbTechNo) - In a positive move, US regulators have just approved 13 new embryonic stem cell lines for researchers to use in their scientific quest to better mankind.
This is the first such move since the Obama Administration took office, and is a breakthrough in the ongoing battle against disease.
The decision will open the door for scientists to experiment with human embryonic stem cells derived from IVF treatments, embryos that are not needed.
“I am happy to say that we now have human embryonic stem cell lines eligible for use by our research community under our new stem cell policy,” said Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.
“In accordance with the guidelines, these stem cell lines were derived from embryos that were donated under ethically sound informed consent processes,”
he added.
Embryonic stem cell research has many a critic, who believe the practice to be unethical and crude.
Those in favor of the practice believe it to be necessary if we are to ever eventually come up with cures for diseases that currently have none.
“More lines are under review now, and we anticipate continuing to expand this list of responsibly derived lines eligible for NIH funding,” Collins said.
