Smoking Increases Risk of Colorectal Cancer

December 4, 2009

A new study suggests that smoking can also increase the risk of colorectal cancer
Boston (DbTechNo) - A new study suggests that smoking can also increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Smoking has already been linked to the increased risk of many cancers, but up until now colorectal cancer was not one of them.

Researchers performed this massive study over a 13 year period, following more than 200,000 participants, all of whom were current or past smokers.

During the 13 year study period, 27% of current smoking participants developed colorectal cancer and 23% of former smokers developed the cancer.

People who reported smoking for at least 25 years, were the most likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Those smokers who managed to quit before turning 40, were found not to be at risk of developing the cancer.

“It took a long time to figure this out because the relationship [between smoking and colorectal cancer] is not as strong [as for some other cancers],” said Dr. Michael Thun, senior author of the study and vice president emeritus of epidemiology and surveillance research at the American Cancer Society.

Colorectal cancer is increasing fast even in adults below 50 years of age. Those who suffer from this cancer, can go for surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. They should also eat fruits, vegetables, also should inculcate in some physical activity. One should avoid red and processed meat. For more details on it, refer http://www.justcancer.org/colorectal-cancer-staging-and-treatment.html
