Boston (DbTechNo) – A mumps outbreak has been reported throughout the Jewish community in New York.
The mumps virus is highly contagious, and results in swelling in the salivary glands in the neck.
Other symptoms of mumps include fever, fatigue, encephalitis and spontaneous abortion.
The virus is preventable with the aid of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination.
According to health officials, they have determined that the source of the outbreak is an 11 year old boy who contracted the virus while visiting a summer camp after returning from England.
So far officials have determined that 24 campers contracted the virus, bringing it home with them when camp ended, resulting in now more than 100 positive cases.
CDC officials state that this mumps outbreak is the largest in the country since 2006.
