Ginkgo biloba Does Not Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

Results of a new study find that ginkgo biloba does not slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease
Boston (DbTechNo) – Results of a new study find that ginkgo biloba does not slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study was carried out by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and involved a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

Ginkgo biloba is the name of a type of herb, that was originally thought to slow the progression of brain deterioration, but this latest study proves otherwise.

“In the United States and particularly in Europe, ginkgo biloba is perhaps the most widely used herbal treatment consumed specifically to prevent age-related cognitive decline,” wrote the researchers.

In the study which lasted 8 years, half of the participants were given ginkgo biloba and the other half given a placebo.

Researchers noted no difference when it came to the degenerating of a person’s brain even though some participants were given the herbal supplement and others the placebo.

“We found no evidence for an effect of G biloba on global cognitive change and no evidence of effect on specific cognitive domains of memory, visual-spatial
construction, language, attention and psychomotor speed, and executive functions,” the study said.

The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
