Boston (DbTechNo) – Results of a new study suggest that quitting smoking after your first heart attack can prolong life.
This is just another reason in a long line of reasons why it is good to quit the nasty habit, as it could make you live longer.
The study featured more than 1500 heart attack survivors, some of whom continued to smoke after their initial heart attack, and others who were able to quit.
All study participants were 65 and older and were treated at 1 of 8 Israeli hospitals for a first-time heart attack.
According to the researchers, those heart attack victims who quit after their first heart attack were 37% less likely to die during the 13 year study period.
Those smokers who did not quit after their heart attacks, but did manage to reduce their smoking, were also at a reduced risk of premature death to a lesser degree.
“Smokers who have had a heart attack should be provided with appropriate interventions to help them quit,” write Dr. Yariv Gerber and colleagues from Tel Aviv University.
