FDA Clears Spiriva of Dangerous Heart Risks
January 15, 2010

Boston (DbTechNo) - According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) there is no link between a popular inhaler called Spiriva and increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death.
The drug is used to treat patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has come under fire as of late because of data suggesting that it cause serious health problems.
The FDA reviewed a 6000 patient drug trial featuring the drug and found no increased risk of ill health in people taking it, verses a placebo.
“This reaffirms the well-established safety profile of Spiriva Handihaler,” said Pfizer Inc in a statement.
Based on the FDA statement doctors should continue to prescribe Spiriva as normal as directed on the label.
Spiriva is jointly marketed by Pfizer and Boehringer Ingelheim.
