Boston (DbTechNo) – There is a growing call for more research to be performed into the dangers of a chemical found in plastic called bisphenol-A.
BPA as it is often referred too, has already been proven to be dangerous if ingested by animals, but not enough is known about actual health risks to warrent any actual changes when it comes to the exclusion of the chemical from plastic products.
The chemical is used to harden plastic, and is found in many products including plastic baby bottles, water bottles etc.
Last year, despite studies proving the opposite, the FDA stated that trace amounts of BPA which leach off of baby bottles do not pose any health risk to infants, but promised to revisit the issue if more evidence could be provided.
Some scientists share the belief that BPA can damage the reproduction system of humans, as well as slow down the brain development of youngsters.
“How much more does the FDA need to know to be convinced it must protect the national food supply from further contamination?,” Environmental Working Group president Ken Cook said in a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
“We urge you to act now to prohibit the use of BPA in food and food containers,” Cook wrote.
