Boston (DbTechNo) – Results of a new study show that women who take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) maybe at an increased risk of developing asthma.
This is the result of a 12 year French study featuring up to 58,000 women.
This is not the first study to find a link between certain forms of HRT and asthma, and is the latest to prove that a risk is present.
One of the more common forms of HRT is a type called estrogen-replacement therapy taken by post-menopausal women to ease the symptoms associated with menopause.
The study, conducted by researchers from France and Mexico, compared health data from women taking HRT to those of a similar age not taking hormones.
Those taking HRT were up to 21% more likely to be diagnosed with asthma, but those taking estrogen were at an even greater risk.
The study can be found in the upcoming addition of the journal Thorax.
