Boston (DbTechNo) – Consuming soft drinks can raise your risk of developing pancreatic cancer according to new study findings.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadliest forms of the disease, and is often diagnosed in its later stages which makes it even more difficult to treat.
The new study finds that drinking only 2 cans of sugary soft drinks a week, can effectively double a person’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Study leader Dr Mark Pereira, from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota says that the high sugar content found in most soft drinks maybe to blame for this increased cancer risk.
Those who drank at least 2 soft drinks weekly were more than 80% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those who did not drink any.
Researchers based their study finding on more than 60,500 participants from Singapore who participated in a massive health study.
“The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth,” Pereira said in a statement.
The study can be found in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
