Antidepressant Interfeers With Breast Cancer Drug tamoxifen
February 9, 2010

Boston (DbTechNo) - The antidepressant drug paxil has been shown to interfeer with a leading breast cancer drug called tamoxifen.
According to researchers from Canada, paxil should be avoided by women taking tamoxifen as the antidepressant interfeers with the Glaxo drug’s ability to fight breast cancers.
Paxil apparently interfeers with the compound that the body uses to process tamoxifen thus reducing the effectiveness of the drug.
Researchers analyzed health care records of 2,430 breast cancer patients taking tamoxifen, some of whom also took an antidepressant.
Researchers noted that women taking both types of drugs were up to 25% more likely to die from breast cancer than those women not taking an antidepressant.
“There is probably a better choice of antidepressants for women taking tamoxifen but (any change) should be done gradually with a doctor,” said Dr. David Juurlink of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto.
