FDA Approves New Drug for Gaucher disease
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have just approved a new drug to treat patients diagnosed with Gaucher disease. The drug, called Vpriv, comes in an injectable form and is manufactured by Shire.

People with Gaucher disease lack a key enzyme in their bodies which is responsible for breaking down fatty chemicals in the body. Without this enzyme, these dangerous chemicals travel to the liver, spleen, bones and nervous system where they pose serious health risks.

The genetic condition is rare to say the least, only affecting 1 out of every 100,000 people living in America. The new drug will offer an alternative to Cerezyme which is another drug to treat the condition manufactured by Genzyme Corp.
