Results of a new study have found a link between the length of time a person smokes marijuana and an increased risk of developing psychosis.
Marijuana is by far and away the number one recreational drug of choice, and not only is it relatively easy to access, but many feel it is less harmful to the body than smoking cigarettes.
The study was carried out by John McGrath from the University of Queensland in Australia and unearthed some interesting findings when it comes to marijuana use.
It was based on surveys of 3,801 people all of whom had once upon a time, or still currently smoked marijuana on a regular basis.
The study found that on average, the longer a person had been smoking marijuana for, the greater their risk was of developing hallucinations or delusions.
“Among all the participants, a longer duration since the first time they used cannabis was associated with multiple psychosis-related outcomes,” the study said.
“Individuals who had experienced hallucinations early in life were more likely to have used cannabis longer and to use it more frequently,” the researcher wrote.
