Shares of InterMune continue to perform very well upon positive news from a clinical trial of their experimental lung scarring drug.
The drug, pirfenidone is to treat a rare and fatal condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a condition in which scarrs form on the lungs for no apparent reason.
Currently there is no treatment available in the United States for people diagnosed with the condition.
“While reversal of the disease may not be feasible … the slowing of progression in loss of lung volume constitutes a clear benefit to patients,” the company said.
FDA officials are questioning the safety of the drug, but despite this fact investors are pouring their money into the company.
Some side effects listed from the clinical trial of the drug include; reactions to sunlight and rash, gastrointestinal issues, liver abnormalities, and in some cases even death.
This coming Tuesday, the FDA will ask an advisory panel to weigh the pros and cons of the drug and InterMune will find out by May fourth if their drug will be approved or not.
