More and more 12 year olds are turning to huffing as a way to get high according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
While the majority of 12 year olds are out socializing with friends, or glued to the television set, a growing number of them are turning to inhalants as a way to get high.
The majority of toxic substances preferred by these youngsters are generally found around the house, and include; gasoline, nail polish, bleach, paint solvents and cleaning spray.
This act is very dangerous and according to health officials, just one sniff of an inhalant is enough to promote instant cardiac arrest.
Even those who do not feel adverse effects from sniffing these chemicals right away are putting themselves at major risk of health issues later in life.
Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can do a lot of damage to the brain, kidneys and liver, but few kids realize the health risks associated with huffing them.
Cases of “Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome are on the rise across America according to family physician Jennifer Caudle.
“You have young people developing dementia, having hallucinations, walking into things,” she told ABC News, “not to mention feelings of agitation and anxiety and poor judgment.”
