Results of a new study show that there maybe a less invasive way to fix a leaky heart valve than surgery.
Abbott Laboratories is the manufacturer of a little surgical clip that doctors say can be threaded through an artery to clamp a leaky valve, thus negating the need for actual surgery.
The procedure appears to be just as effective as surgery and is much safer with less risk of complications.
“As clinicians, we have seen our patients transformed from highly symptomatic to highly functional with a catheter procedure and without a long hospital stay or a long recovery,” noted Doctor Ted Feldman, director of the cardio catheterization laboratory for North Shore University health system.
“The real excitement is seeing our experience with individual patients reflected in trial results in a clear way,” he added.
The new technique was presented in detail at the 59th annual conference of the American College of Cardiology.
