Diabetes treatment options took a blow with the anticipated release of results from the ACCORD study which prove that reducing blood pressure does not result in a lesser risk for heart disease.
Furthermore, monitoring one’s blood pressure to insure it stayed around the 120 mm Hg did not appear to reduce risks of heart attacks or strokes, both of which can be fatal.
Traditional therapy when treating diabetics revolves around stabalizing glucose, and keeping blood pressure on the low side to reduce stress on the heart, both of which have been proven to be rather ineffective by results from the study.
Another belief when it came to reducing heart disease risk was also shot down by study results.
Monitoring one’s cholesterol levels to insure that the bad stuff is at a minimum was also thought to be a positive factor at reducing risk of adverse cardiac events but this belief was also shot down by the study.
Despite the study findings, doctors continue to stress the importance for diabetes patients to exercise and follow a healthy diet as both play an active role in blood pressure, as together, they all contribute to a healthy life.
The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology meeting in Atlanta, Ga.
