Environmental Protection Agency Reviewing Fle and Tick Product Labelling

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be taking a closer look at flea and tick products for dogs and cats after reports of injuries and even death in some cases.

These products are vital in summer for pets, especially those that go outdoors on a regular basis as they protect them from becoming a host for parasites.

The most common type of flea and tick treatments come in the form of an ointment applied to the skin of the dog or cat.

In some cases, animals exposed to the products develop allergic reactions which can range in severity from mild to very severe.

Pet owners are urged to read the label of the fle and tick product very carefully to learn the proper way to apply it to their pets.

“The important take-home message is that although adverse reactions can occur with all flea and tick products, most effects are relatively mild and include skin irritation and stomach upset,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, ASPCA veterinary toxicologist and Senior Vice President Animal Health Services.
