Breast cancer screening does save lives afterall

Results of a new breast cancer study show that performing screening programs does indeed save lives.

Many health experts have been at odds when it comes to benefits of breast cancer screening, mainly due to many feeling that sometimes, screening procedures are overperformed.

Researchers of the study state that for every woman who is subjected to unnecessary breast cancer screening, two women are saved by mammograms.

Mammograms benefits appear to outweigh the risks according to the researchers, despite previous studies that prove that in some cases, they are not only a waste of money, but do not result in lower death rates when performed regularly.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t yet got a flawless screening test, and some cases that are picked up wouldn’t have needed treatment,” said Stephen Duffy of Queen Mary, University of London, who led the study.

“But for every case like this, screening saves two women who would have otherwise died from breast cancer,” he said.
