Biomarker Test Determines Which Breast Cancers Will Be Aggressive

A new biomarker test has been developed to determine which women are at risk of being diagnosed with aggressive forms of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the more common types of the disease to be diagnosed in American women, but when caught in its earliest stage is very treatable.

Researchers examined the health records of more than 12000 women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, a form of the disease that is yet to leave the milk glands of the breast.

They identified a set of three biomarkers that when present in the patient, raised their risk of an aggressive tumor vurses a non-invasive one.

The researchers say that by identifying which tumors are going to become aggressive, it allows for those patients with non-invasive cancers of the breast to be spared treatments that are unnecessary.
