Five new genetic variations have been discovered that raise the risk of breast cancer in women.
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of the disease to be diagnosed in women, but when caught at its early stage is very treatable.
The more that is known about cancer, the better the opportunity becomes of vinding new treatments to offer people diagnosed with the disease, thus this new development is very good news indeed.
British researchers examined the genomes of 16,536 patients, to try to find similarities that would raise the overall risk.
The new five genetic variants add to the 13 that are already known about, bringing the total of gene mutations linked to breast cancer to 18.
The study is published in the journal Nature Genetics.
